Chapter 17

“That’s not all. I hacked into everything I could and found the connections we were looking for between Conner and Randall. It is being said that Conner worked for Randall. The connections are all contrived. I don’t know who Conner worked for, but it most certainly was not Randall. Up until twelve days ago, there was no connection to be found. All of the information of their ‘working relationship’ was planted the day of Conner’s death. Every last bit of it.”

“How did you find that out? How can you be sure?” This was a huge implication, and I had to know that Lena was completely secure in her findings.

She shrugged her shoulders, like it was no big deal. “I checked the sitemap.” When she could tell that I wasn’t following, she rolled her eyes. “A sitemap is an .xml file that contains the URLs and metadata for each URL within a website.”

“I know what a sitemap is, but I’m still lost as to how you got that information.” I motioned for her to keep going.

“Oh geez, here, I’ll show you.” Lena sat down at her computer. “Okay, the easiest way to do it is to enter ‘sitemap.xml’ at the end of the URL, and, as you know, it brings up the metadata. In this case it was buried, so that didn’t work. The next thing to try is to enter the site into Search and check for the sitemap that way. I just entered the website and added filetype.xml and voilà, Search led me to their timestamps.”

Lena clicked on the Search link, and it pulled up lines and lines of gibberish. “If you look here,” she pointed to the lines of gibberish on her screen. I got up closer and was shocked that I could see it there plain as day. Dates and timestamps of the media site’s article. “I could see that all of the information linking Randall with Conner was added on the day that Conner died.”

This couldn’t be real. How could the AGI and the government do this to someone? They would sentence an innocent woman to life in prison and ruin her for a seat in Congress? How could that one seat be that important? What were we missing here? “It’s a coup. I thought this only happened in foreign countries, where the governments are corrupt and the people have given up on the system.” My mind was reeling.

“Ha! Girl, coups most definitely do not only happen in foreign countries. We have plenty of corrupt people on our soil.”

What was the motive for such a brutal attack on Randall? “But, why?”

She shrugged her shoulders. “That piece of the puzzle is still missing.”

“So, what now?”

“So … nothing now.” Lena gave me the sternest look she had in her arsenal. “We’ll keep an eye on the situation, but Kate, you need to face the reality that you have no control over this. You can’t go to the FBI and say you work for the Alternate Government Initiative
